Fleas and Ticks
Fleas are one of the most common causes of allergies and scratching behaviors in dogs and cats. Pets spend more time outdoors and around other animals in warmer weather so spring and summer are times to be especially vigilant in your parasite control. In addition, ticks come out in Michigan when the weather gets warmer so an all-in-one flea and tick control is just what you need to help your pets stay itch free all summer long!
The Problem of Fleas
Fleas cause a number of problems for your pets. Many pets are allergic to flea saliva and this can cause flea allergy dermatitis, which is the most common cause of skin allergies in dogs. They can also cause skin infections to occur on your pets. In addition, having these allergies causes your pets hair coat to become oily, dull, thin, and unhealthy looking. Fleas also carry parasites that can pass to your pets if the flea is ingested. In some cases, fleas can cause anemia if the infestation is bad enough or the animal is immunocompromised.
The Problem of Ticks
Getting bit by a tick can mean more than just a sore spot for your pet. The four most common types of ticks you could find on your pet include the Deer tick, American Dog tick, Brown Dog tick, and Lone Star tick. These ticks are most commonly found in areas with long grass that deer or other wild animals have run through. The tick attaches itself to a long piece of grass and waits for the first warm body that walks by and then attaches itself to the animal. It is important to check your pets for ticks if they have been in situations like this. Once the tick bites, it burrows its head into the animals (or your) skin and begins feeding. Ticks can spread a multitude of diseases including Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and Ehrlichiosis, all of which, if left untreated, can cause serious problems, even death, to your pets.
Fleas and ticks pose a nasty threat to all your pets so be proactive and protect your pets this spring and summer to keep them healthy all year long.
